Nizhny Novgorod airport is one of the oldest in the country. The first regular flight in Russia from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod was taken July 15, 1923. From 1993 the airport has international status, certified for all types of aviation activities. It is the alternate airport for airports of the Moscow aviation hub. At the end of 2019 the airport served 1,13 million people. The flights were organized on a regular basis for 55 destinations: in Russia - in 26 cities, abroad - in 29 cities; passengers were transported by planes of 28 airlines (22 Russian and 6 foreign). Strigino airport location makes it the primary alternate for the Moscow hub airports. This gives additional benefits to Nizhny Novgorod air hub. Today, it serves the international and domestic flights to 55 destinations, including St. Petersburg, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Prague, as well as the well-known foreign resorts. They are served by 28 Russian and foreign airlines. The average annual passenger traffic is over 900 000 people.
